The small, whitewashed brick building known as ‘Slottet’ (The Castle) stands out amongst the red workers’ houses in ‘Gata’ (The Street). Today, the building houses Atelier Slottet, where Hanne Gunnestad sells her own paintings, drawings, handmade jewellery, herbal creams and other handmade products.
The building was constructed around 1770 using grey stone and slag stone. It was originally a workers’ dwelling, but in the 1920s it was converted into a laundry for the workers’ dwellings in the area.
The house came to be known locally as ‘Slottet’ because it was whitewashed – a costly luxury at the time. Most of the workers’ housing was painted red, as the red pigment was a by-product of iron production.
Open 12-4pm on Sundays from 1 June, and otherwise when the sign is outside.
