Rakel Seweriin (1906–1995) is regarded as one of Norway’s most important female politicians of the post-war era. Among other things, she served as Minister of Social Affairs in Oscar Torp’s Labour Party government from 1953 to 1955. She sat in the Storting as a representative of the Oslo Labour Party for six terms, from 1945 to 1969. She was politically active throughout her life.
The exhibition on Rakel Seweriin explores her life and upbringing in Eidsfoss, and presents examples of her political work as a Member of the Storting over a period of 24 years, from 1945 to 1969. We explain how opportunities for women have changed since 1913, when universal suffrage was introduced in our country. The exhibition has been produced to mark the 1913–2013 Suffrage Anniversary and the 1814–2014 Constitution Anniversary.
The story of Rakel is also, thematically, a continuation of the exhibition “To Elise – A former widow at the Eidsfos Ironworks”, which is on display in Bråtagata, by the Old Eidsfos Tavern.
The exhibition on Rakel Seweriin can be found in the Old Schoolhouse at Hauane, which forms part of the Eidsfoss Ironworks.
